Il Gorgo della Sposa

IL GORGO DELLA SPOSA

The term ‘gorgo’ denotes a cavity occupied by a pool of water the origin of which is traceable to the action of floods in the presence of an obstacle, such as a bank or a detected ancient river. Typical of the Polesine area, a long, narrow strip of land enclosed between the Po and Adige rivers, gorghi feed on both rain and spring water.

The Gorgo della Sposa, already referred to in a 1269 deed of concession, is located in Trecenta and is the largest one in the area. It owes its name to a legend narrating the death of a young bride on her wedding day. Promised by the family to an elderly nobleman but in love with a village youth, the girl allegedly preferred to throw herself into the gorgo waters than getting married.

Legend is the starting point for the exploration of a place, the deep Veneto province, made up of mist, solitudes and anxieties, nowhere and everywhere, a haunting yet familiar spot, a land of ostensible quiet as the waters that cross it.
